10/09/2015: National Cyber Security Awareness Month
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 9, 2015
October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month and Hatboro Federal wants to help you stay safe online.
National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) was created as a collaborative effort between government and industry to ensure every American has the resources they need to stay safer and more secure online. Now in its 12th year, NCSAM is co-led by the Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance, the nation’s leading nonprofit public-private partnership promoting the safe and secure use of the Internet and digital privacy.
In light of National Cyber Security Awareness Month, Hatboro Federal has compiled the following list:
Eight Essential Cyber Security Best Practices
Lock it up. To avoid possible information leaks, embarrassing photos being spread, or the occasional practical joker, simply remember to lock your computer before leaving your desk. |
Protect your machine. A firewall is the first line of defense when it comes to guarding confidential information. |
Think before you click. Don't click on any link unless you know you can trust the source and you are certain of where the link will send you. |
Watch for the "S". It is important that you make sure that "https" is displayed as part of the URL you visit, as it shows the authenticity of the security certificate on that webpage. |
Be a cautious surfer. It is easy for users to pick up malicious code that can infect a computer with viruses simply by clicking on a link. |
Be smart with your phone. Smartphones are essential pocket-sized computers and should protected as such. |
Be aware. If something seems fishy, it probably is. Social engineering techniques include phishing emails, fake phone calls, and physical impersonation. |
Passwords. Having more complex passwords can help protect you and your data. |
